55 Fiction: Shortest Short Stories
January 6, 2006
If you have a penchant for literature & brevity you must check out 55 Fiction.
It is a New Times Magazine writing contest that invites writers to submit
their own short stories -- short stories that contain no more than 55 words.
That's right 55 words.
Pretty wild when you consider that by the end of this sentence
I will have already burned through 68 words in this post. That's short.
The rules are simple -- write a fictitious 55-word or less story
with words found in a standard dictionary. The story must include a setting,
character or characters, some conflict, and a resolution.
Perhaps I'm a geek but it sounds like fun to me.
I will write & publish a story in the comment section
and I would be honoured if some of my readers,
and most especially my frequent commenters,
decided to play along and share one too.
It will be fun, I promise.

Hmmm. The wheels are turning. Sound similar in concept to the Postcard Story competition that the Writer's Union of Canada has each year.

Hadn't thought about it
but it is a similar contest.
In any case
here is my, somewhat hurried,
first attempt -- I may take another stab.
Gravity
In a vacuum,
objects fall at the same rate, she thought,
size doesn't matter. But, sadly, life isn't in vacuum
and her 300lbs mattered.
Pity sex, she saw it clearly,
she had fallen in love and he hadn't.
Her weight plunged
murderous upon his chest,
stilling it with a breathless
understanding of gravity. - At Saturday, January 07, 2006 3:59:00 PM, Robert said...

Another attempt.
Books
"What can you tell by just looking?" her husband said,
gesturing toward the restaurant phone.
Paige shrugged.
"That guy's up to something," he said.
"Really?"
"I read people," he said with a kiss, "they're better than books".
She smiled, glancing carefully at her boyfriend on the phone.
"That," she whispered, "depends entirely on the book." - At Saturday, January 07, 2006 5:10:00 PM, Scotty said...

Here's my contribution...
The Grim Kitten
The toy mouse sensed its doom.
Death circled on kitten paws, quietly stalking the frightened toy. Alone in the dark, the toy despaired. It cried out for help, but was ignored by the other toys.
Will the end be quick?, the toy wondered. Will I feel pain?
Yes, came the answer, you will.
Death pounced. - At Saturday, January 07, 2006 9:18:00 PM, John Mutford said...

Poker Face
"I've got cancer." Gerry had thrown this out like a confession in the middle of the third hand.
Craig looked at his cards; 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 - heart, heart, heart, heart, heart. "Shitty luck, man," a voice said.
So Craig put down his cards, looked at his friend Gerry and stopped playing. - At Saturday, January 07, 2006 10:57:00 PM, Robert said...

Thank you both.
Not only do I like your stories
but I appreciate the fact that you
took the time to play along.

Suitor
He came every day to the coffeeshop. Six foot four, blue eyes, with a fedora on and bright red pants. Ordered a small coffee single cream half hot water. He'd wink at me at first sight. He even offered to buy me a diamond. I'd probably go for it if he weren't in his eighties. - At Sunday, January 08, 2006 10:18:00 PM, Robert said...

I don't need...
last names to know who Debbie and Toni-Marie are and I can find my way from Happy Adventure to Misery Point in the fog. My morning comes a half hour earlier and any day without 'RDF' is good. I've seen a mummer, tasted toutons and the image conjured by the word Dildo might be different for me than you because I'm a product of this place.
