Newfoundland Accent in MP3
January 18, 2006
In 1997, Department of Theatre and Film at the University Of Kansas
Created the International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA)
as a resource for actors and other performing artists.
Their goal was to record standard passages
along with some unscripted speech so that would-be thespians
could master accurate regional accents and dialects.
And wouldn't you know it,
their collection includes three dialect/accent entries
from Newfoundland -- St. John's, Placentia
and Eastport (my hometown).
Finally there's
no excuse for the pseudo-Irish crap
they've been passing as Newfoundland English.
Are you listening, Jason Behr?

If you wanna hear an accent, send someone with a tape recorder to the middle of beautiful downtown Bonavista.

I am quivering with excitement even as I listen to these clips....don't know what it is about a Newfoundland accent that drives me wild...(blissful sigh escaping her lips as she faints with a huge smile on her face)

I worked as a parks officer here in Ontario for six summers (a campground), near a community where a number of Newfoundlanders had settled. For many years after, the sound of a Newfoundland accent turned my stomach. Talk about trouble-makers...and drink?...man oh man...

Ah!! Parks officer (Ranger Smith), lol! Don't you know that N'landers are the biggest rum drinkers in the world? In 1815 the average head of the household (husband, and the only member who drank) ordered 28gal (yes 160oz gallons) of rum per year. That's 112 forties per year!! That is not counting all the ayles that the wife made for him, lemon gin for Nan, and all the wine, port, brandy, etc. that the arosticrats drank. Anyway even today, being the biggest rum drinkers, we have the lowest crime rate in Canada. So, chill out Mr. Ranger and don't take us too serious :)

I don't need...
last names to know who Debbie and Toni-Marie are and I can find my way from Happy Adventure to Misery Point in the fog. My morning comes a half hour earlier and any day without 'RDF' is good. I've seen a mummer, tasted toutons and the image conjured by the word Dildo might be different for me than you because I'm a product of this place.
