StonePics: Graves Online
January 16, 2006
If you're buried in Newfoundland
there is a 10.9% chance your name is Mary or John...
but then if you're buried you have bigger things to worry about.
Assuming you're still on the happy side of the daisies,
you might be a little more impressed by the stats and other info on StonePics,
an online database that attempts to photographically index every cemetery,
headstone, and monument in the province of Newfoundland.
It strikes me as a daunting, if slightly macabre,
concept but must be a wonderful resource for genealogists.
The database itself is online
but the pictures of headstones must be purchased on CD,
well on 165 CDs to be technical. Currently Memorial University's
Centre for Newfoundland Studies holds the province's only complete copy.
Strange, that --
you'd think everyone would want one.

You deserve to win the award for finding the most interesting things to blog about.
I think I was peripherally aware of this project. My grandparents live next to the old cemetery at home, and I remember them saying something about a "crowd taking pictures of the stones flat on the ground".
Possible link? Maybe. - At Tuesday, January 17, 2006 4:29:00 PM, said...

Given your situation, why not:

Well,
I guess that would
work too.

I don't need...
last names to know who Debbie and Toni-Marie are and I can find my way from Happy Adventure to Misery Point in the fog. My morning comes a half hour earlier and any day without 'RDF' is good. I've seen a mummer, tasted toutons and the image conjured by the word Dildo might be different for me than you because I'm a product of this place.
